The increasing demand for modern electric vehicles has led to the need for more efficient batteries with enhanced performances. Different innovative designs and constructions promise to deliver several benefits to consumers (such as greater range, more power, faster charging times, longer lifetime or better operation in cold weather) and manufacturers (a more streamlined production and reduced costs). These new constructions also require new production concepts. During the last years, laser processing of battery materials has established itself as one of the best processing tools for improving manufacturing flexibility and product reliability. Laser cutting and welding reached a high level of maturity, and they are already implemented in battery production lines. Laser cutting can be applied to different components of the batteries, including separators and electrodes. Laser welding has evolved to cover the need for a minimal heat affected zone, accurate penetration depth control, high process speed and welding of dissimilar metals, with the development of new laser sources with the right parameters. Other laser processes, as laser texturing of electrode materials, laser structuring and modification of batteries components or laser ablation to remove the coatings on the busbars, are also emerging with a high potential to enhance batteries performances.

In this meeting, we will discuss with the whole supply chain the latest developments, new applications and the trends in this market. We will also cover the upcoming needs and challenges from the end users regarding new tools and components.
