EPIC Online Technology Meeting on Hybrid Photonic Integrated Circuits
Online Event

The traditional silicon platform cannot provide all of the functionality required for fully integrated photonic circuits and, therefore, the last decade has seen a strong increase in research and development of hybrid and heterogeneous photonic integrated circuits. The aim of this meeting is to discuss how the record breaking experimental demonstrations will address entirely new approaches for precise mass manufacture of PICs with unprecedented variety and flexibility.

Speakers

Martijn Heck is Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering, Aarhus University, where he works on photonic integration and its applications, with a focus on microwave and terahertz photonics and chip to chip and on-chip interconnects. He received the M.Sc. degree in applied physics and the Ph.D. degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology, in 2002 and 2008, respectively. From 2007 to 2009, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the COBRA Research Institute and the Laser Centre, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. From 2009 to 2013, he was Research Scientist and Associate Director of the Silicon Photonics Center at the University of California Santa Barbara.

Nazanin is the Business Development Manager at Smart Photonics BV, an InP pure-play foundry based in the Netherlands. She has dedicated her career to technology commercialization and product development. She holds a Master's degree in Materials Chemistry and took part in the first cohort of Science and Technology commercialization program in Beedie School of Business in Vancouver, Canada. She has worked on products and interfaced with clients in a broad range of industries throughout her career in her roles as Process Development and Integration Engineer to Head of Sales and Marketing. The range of industries she has interfaced with includes: medical (MEMS implants and surgical device manufacturing), space, telecom, datacom, automotive as well as agriculture.

Business Development Manager at SMART Photonics

Michael studied physics and engineering at University Stuttgart and Ecole Centrale Paris. After his PhD at ICFO in Barcelona in 2014 he joined the laboratory of Prof. Kippenberg at EPFL in Lausanne, where he advanced frequency comb generation on integrated silicon nitride chips towards applications and was involved in several international research projects. In 2016, he co-founded LIGENTEC. At LIGENTEC, Michael is advancing the technology development of silicon nitride based integrated circuits and is looking for new business opportunities and is also overviewing technical sales and marketing.

Managing Director at LIGENTEC

Moritz Kleinert is a project manager in the fields of integrated photonics and quantum technologies at Fraunhofer HHI. In 2018 he received a Ph.D. in physics for the hybrid photonic integration of novel optoelectronic devices. He holds several patents related to integrated optics and is author/co-author of more than 50 papers in international journals and conference contributions. Currently, he is project manager in the EU QT flagship project UNIQORN and the German QuNET initiative and responsible for the development of hybrid photonic integrated circuits for quantum communications.
