EPIC Online Technology Meeting on Metamaterials and Metalenses
Online Event

Optical metamaterials and metalenses offer many novel functionalities, such as super-resolution imaging, negative optical refraction, beam shaping, and steering. But what is their technology readiness level? In this online meeting, we are going to review the process of industrial adaption of these futuristic technologies in the field and learn from the industry leaders about the first commercially available products comprising metamaterials and metalenses.

Speakers

Dr. Junghyun Park is a principal researcher at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Korea. He got his B.S and Ph.D in the electrical engineering at Seoul National University in Korea in 2006 and 2011, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University, Materials Science and Engineering with Professor Mark Brongersma. Since joining SAIT in 2015, he has been working in the field of metasurfaces and their applications including light detection and ranging (LiDAR), holography, and free space optical communications.

Junghyun Park

Gauthier Briere, is Product Marketing Manager at the Engineered Optics group under the CTO Office at Applied Materials. He obtained his Master Degree on Physics of Lasers and Light Matter Interaction at the Universite of Bourgogne. He, then pursues by doing a PhD in nanophotonics in 2019 at the Universite of Cote d’Azur under the supervision of Patrice Genevet at the Laboratory CRHEA, on the topic of Metasurfaces made of Gallium Nitride with application in the visible range. In 2020, he joined Dispelix, a successful Finnish start up, developing waveguide combiner for augmented reality application. He is now leading the Product marketing for flat optics at Applied Materials.

Product Marketing Manager at Applied Materials

Niklas Hansson, 10+ years at NILT, currently Head of Application Engineering, dedicated to improving ToF, LiDAR and AR/VR with flat optics.

Head of Application Engineering at NIL Technology

Rob earned his Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Harvard under Dr. Federico Capasso. He has authored or co-authored 20+ publications, providing critical advances and first demonstrations in the field of metasurfaces. His work has moved scientific research into real-world applications.

Co-Founder and CEO at Metalenz

Patrick Schuster is a Process Technology Engineer within the SmartNIL® R&D team at EV Group. His focus is on process development for EVG’s Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) equipment. Patrick received his Bachelor of Science in Sensor Technology and Analytics from the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg where he focused on microtechnology processes within the semiconductor industry.

Process Engineer at EV Group

Lieven Penninck is an expert on optical modelling methods focusing on meta-surfaces and nano-photonics. In 2019 he founded PlanOpSim to develop and offer numerical simulation software for the design of metasurfaces, metalenses, and planar optics.
Aside from software development, PlanOpSim also provides optical design services to the photonics and optics industry. He holds a PhD in Photonics Engineering from Ghent University on development of simulation methods for OLED and liquid crystal devices.
Outside of academia he worked on LCD display R&D and simulation and measurement of OLEDs and solar cells in various roles.

Maryvonne Chalony is an application engineer in the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys. She is focused on passive and active device simulations using simulators based on Maxwell’s equations and is working on projects for imaging systems such as AR/VR applications. Chalony received a Ph.D. degree in cold atom physics from the University of Nice.
